MEMORIAL SERVICE FOR MADIBA AT SAHETI SCHOOL CHAPEL

On Sunday 8 December 2013, the Head of the Greek Orthodox Church in Johannesburg and Pretoria, His Eminence Archbishop Damaskinos described Nelson Mandela as a man of God, during a memorial service held in honour of the late statesman at SAHETI School’s Chapel.

Advocate George Bizos, long-time friend and confidant of Madiba, also paid tribute to him and shared some of many memories from the past 60 years. He spoke about Nelson Mandela’s role in the Greek community, and recalled that the Greek city of Olympia had bestowed the freedom of the town on Mr Mandela during the 1980’s, an honour that he was unaware of, as prison authorities had intercepted the letter.

He accepted the award when he visited Greece later, after his release from prison. Mr Bizos urged the congregation to draw inspiration from Madiba and follow his example.
