On Friday 15 August 2014 His Eminence Archbishop Sergios officiated at the service of the Holy Eucharist for the Feast of The Dormition of The Mother of God, together with Reverend Fr. Nikolaos and deacon Fr. Michael. The service was followed by an Artoklasia to the Theotokos.
In his address after the service His Eminence said that our Lord and Saviour was born through Her and that the Theorokos is our protector and intercedes for us to her Son for our salvation.
He said that the Feast of the Dormition of Our Most Holy Lady, the Theotokos and Ever-Virgin Mary is celebrated to commemorate the repose (kimisis) of the Theotokos. The Feast also commemorates the translation or assumption into heaven of the body of the Theotokos. She watches over us and is our protector. The Theotokos is very highly revered by Orthodox Christians, and many miracles are attributed to Her. And countless churches and monasteries have been built in Her name.
He wished the president of the Hellenic Community of Cape Town and everyone present and their families a blessed Feast day and many years to all those who celebrate their name day on this day.
