"My post is not about religion; it is about compassion regardless of your religious beliefs or their absence. St. Tabitha Community Center is not quite a community center in our "American" understanding. It is an orphanage for children who were found on the streets of Kibera slums in Nairobi, Kenya. Fr. Agapios, or Habbil Lipesa Omukuba, is an orthodox priest who has a parish in this extremely poor and needy community. I became friends with him over a year ago and I know his e...ntire family, he has four kids on his own. Whose heart is not bleeding for a hungry child digging in the garbage for food? Habbil rescued 19 of such kids and now they have shelter, food, and go to the school run by his church. Some of them have to start school at 14, but are very excited about it because they understand that this is their way out of poverty. Some of the expances for the orphanage: $200 monthly rent for the apartemnt they live in; $110 to each of the two women who cook for them and take care of them. $100-450 annual school fees, depending on grade (Kenya doesn't have free public schools). Now compare this to our family night out in the US. Give what you can. Thank you for reading and everyone have an awesome day!
